Partner Family Advocate

We get asked all the time, "How can I help Habitat if I don't know how to build?" We always tell folks they don't need to know how to build, we'll teach you everything you'll need to know. But some are still hesitant, hammers can be intimidating.

But there are a myriad of ways to lend a helping hand to Habitat for Humanity and to our Partner Families. One important way is to become a Partner Family Advocate.

A Partner Family Advocate starts out with the family when they learn they've been accepted into the home ownership program and stick with them through the first year after they move into their Habitat house. The Advocate is there to answer questions, to ease frustrations or anxiety, to verify Sweat Equity hours are earned, to accompany the Partner Family to education classes and the final closing. Advocates also work along side the homeowner when possible to help build their house.

The Partner Family Advocate becomes the liaison for the family to insure all points are being covered and any potential roadblocks are managed. But things don't slow down after the family moves in. The Advocate makes a point of checking in on the family at least once a month to make sure they are settling into their new home and answers those questions all new homeowner have.

Becoming a homeowner isn't an easy process, especially the Habitat way, it isn't meant to be. But it can be made easier when you've got someone by your side throughout the process.
