I've always wanted to do that!

I hear that exclamation from people all the time while I'm out sharing the good news of Habitat. They get very excited about the prospect of putting up walls, painting, siding, or even laying tiles and doing something good for another person. We know how good it feels to get to the end of the day and have something you can point to and say "I did that!" Especially when it is for someone else. Probably someone you don't even know. Valid reasons for volunteering and ones we respect and encourage. These are the reasons and feelings that have made Habitat for Humanity so successful in our mission.

But then, when it comes time to actually wielding that interferes. Overtime at work, kids soccer games, grocery shopping, laundry, errands, family responsibilities. We get it. We have all those things as well. We understand how hard it can be to commit to a Saturday of handing sheet rock.

So how do you balance your need, your desire, to do good with the responsibility of managing your life? That can be tough. So I have a suggestion.

Instead of committing to an entire Saturday of building, why not offer to provide food for the volunteers on a work day. Volunteers always work harder, and happier, when they've been fed. You and your family, or your office, could commit to bringing by food and even do it while running your errands. You might even want to stay a minute and visit with the volunteers or the Partner Family who will be receiving that house. It is a great way to get your kids involved in something positive and giving back.

You might consider joining the Board of Directors or one of the many committees it takes to manage Habitat for Humanity. That can be as rewarding as pounding nails, sometimes.

There are many ways to get involved at Habitat. Many ways you can say, "I'm so glad I did that!" Call us at (308) 534-6251 or stop by the office. We'd be happy to share the good news of Habitat for Humanity with you, and discuss ways for you to become involved.
